During the last five years, persecution in Eritrea has worsened. Many believers are reported to be facing immediate dismissal from their jobs and imprisonment if found practicing their faith. According to Release Eritrea UK, refugees at Shimelba refugee camp in Ethiopia, which is about 57 kilometers south of the Eritrean border, reported that they have escaped cruel punishment from the government.
The persecution has intensified especially in the town of Adiquala where a growing number of children have been separated from their parents and some were put in prison along with their parents. About 2,000 Christians are believed to be in prison in Eritrea. They have been constantly forced to renounce their faith. The government of Eritrea shut down all unregistered churches in May 2002 and declared their religious activities ’illegal.’PRAY for God’s comfort for 15,000 refugees at Shimelba camp who have lost their homes, their jobs, and their families due to persecution.
PRAY that the lost children will be reunited to their parents or families and that God will protect His children who are facing danger.
PRAY that God will move the hearts of the Eritrean authorities and they will soon release all who have been incarcerated for their faith, and grant religious freedom to all citizens.
